the science of reading

The science of reading has revolutionized the way I teach reading. My once balanced-literacy lessons are now based on structured-literacy using phonemic awareness, encoding, decoding, and visual, auditory, and multisensory opportunities for students to connect their speech to print. I value the research of David A. Kilpatrick, Wiley Blevins, Dr. Deborah Glaser, and other literacy giants who have shaped my instruction.

During the 2020-2021 school year, I had the opportunity to private tutor several students who were struggling readers. Through the use of the science of reading and structured literacy, my students' reading scores doubled and tripled, giving them confidence and the ability to enjoy what was once a begrudging activity.

Here are some of the recent professional developments I have attended in order to grow my knowledge and expertise:

In the Fall of 2021, I began teaching Kindergarten and was able to implement my knowledge of structured literacy in a classroom setting. Students are taught letter sounds using a sound wall, high-frequency-words using the heart word method, and articulation featuring their own mouths. I share about my experiencese using structured literacy on my Instagram account below.
